Taste of Wicklow Local Culture

Wicklow is a county filled with so many beautiful things to do and see, interesting places to visit and a vibrant local culture. Located just south of Ireland’s capital city, Wicklow is nicknamed the Garden of Ireland and with good reason! Here are our highlights of Wicklow’s local culture.

Favourite Spots

Our favourite spot, and one we get the pleasure of seeing every day is the Poulaphouca Reservoir, locally known as the Blessington Lakes. This huge man-made reservoir was created in the 1940’s by damming the River Liffey and is now the main water supply for Dublin. The lakes cover 500 acres of water and the views across the lakes are unrivalled. The road around the lake offers stunning views of both the lake and the nearby Wicklow Mountains, you can even enjoy a dip on a summers day.

Neighbouring Walking Tours

If you want a guided tour of some of Wicklow’s most scenic and magnificent spots, along with funny and informative commentary, choose Walkabout Wicklow for a walking tour. They offer a variety of tours, both guided and self-guided to suit walkers of all ages and abilities. We recommend the Full Moon Walks, a novel way of seeing our beautiful landscape by the light of the moon.

Local Activities

If you don’t fancy walking and want an alternative way to see Wicklow, why not try a tour on horseback! We recommend the Hollywood Trekking Centre. Take an ancient pilgrim route which leads to Glendalough and is guided by experienced and knowledgeable guides and all on horseback. They offer a 90-minute trek or a half day tour and can cater for all riding abilities from novice to experienced.

Local Arts

To experience the best in local and national talents on-screen and on stage, visit the Mermaid Arts Centre. It’s a bit of a drive away, just under an hour, but you are guaranteed one of Wicklow’s most genuine and excellent cultural experiences. They offer everything from film, comedy, art and music both from local and national artists. We are especially looking forward to Bray Musical Society’s version of Seussical, an adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ classic, perfect for the whole family!

Food Guide

You don’t have to travel far to experience one of Wicklow’s top culinary experiences. Our in-house restaurant The Lime Tree is second to none when it comes to presenting the freshest and best quality meals. Our chefs are both skilled and creative, showcasing the best of Wicklow’s local cuisine, using mainly local and organically produced ingredients. The restaurant also has stunning views of our championship golf course. For a real Wicklow welcome and a luxury experience you won’t forget, visit Tulfarris Hotel and Golf Resort in the heart of the Blessington Lakes.
