Cycling in Wicklow

Cycling in Wicklow

Wicklow is one of the most beautiful parts of Ireland there is no better way to explore than on two wheels. Wicklow Mountains National Park is Ireland’s largest park and is a huge attraction for hikers and cyclists of all abilities. The Wicklow Mountains in particular showcase the best of the county, with some of Irelands’ most beautiful cycling routes taking in hills and mountains, sandy beaches, rivers, lakes, towns and more. Tulfarris Hotel in Wicklow now has a cycling package, designed to encourage guests to get out on two wheels and explore before returning to our beautiful hotel for a meal and a great night’s sleep. The Sally Gap – 42km

One of the most well-known routes is also one of its toughest climbs. Experienced riders will enjoy a steep ascent and just over 40k of cycle tracks. Drive to Roundwood close to the beautiful Glendalough and head for Sally Gap, savouring stunning views of the dark waters of Lough Tay. Take the left turn onto the Military Road and savour the wild and rural beauty of Wicklow. En route, you’ll pass the Glenmacnass waterfall – a perfect picture opportunity, the beautiful village of Laragh – ideal for a coffee stop and over the Avonmore river for the last climb of the day. After the ascent, it’s all downhill back to Roundwood where you can grab a bite to eat before heading home.

Rathdrum Wicklow Gap & Dublin Route – 74KM

In the same area as the Sally Gap route, another beautiful cycle is the Rathdrum Wicklow Gap & Dublin Route. At almost twice the distance, the cycle is a test but the ascent is milder than our first option. The area directly around Glendalough is renowned for its beauty, especially the National Park. The only real way to take in a lot of the area in one day and take some time to truly enjoy it is by bike. The climb over the Wicklow Gap is a challenge, as is the climb to Ballinascorney but you’ll be rewarded with views of mountains lakes and valleys the likes of which you won’t see anywhere else in Ireland. Stop in Glendalough to explore the monastic site and grab a cup of coffee to keep you fuelled for the long trip.

The Tinahely Loop – 70km

The Tinahely Loop is a long but enjoyable route, with a lot less effort required than our first two options. This loop takes you around the base of the Wicklow Mountains where you can enjoy the fantastic views without the strain of climbing them. Starting from Shillelagh, head into Tinahely, Hackettstown, Kiltegan and before reaching Glenmalure, turn for Aughrim and follow the loop all the way back. You can stop for coffee and a homemade scone in the lovely Tinahely Farm Shop where they specialise in artisan and local food and produce.

Ballinastoe Mountain Bike Park

Hardcore cyclists will love the Ballinastoe Mountain Bike Park, especially those who prefer mountain biking over road cycling. This fantastic 14km trail consists of steep forest climbs with speedy descents on the other side, as well as stunning views across Lough Tay and the surrounding forest, woodlands and lakes. From as little as €30 a day, they’ll rent you a bike and allow you to venture the entire trail system from open until close. There are trails to suit most riders and abilities. Experienced cyclists will love the moorland and thick forest on the lower section while newer riders can enjoy the shorter loop with wider forest trails.
